KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia
Malaysian compact car maker Perodua says sales surged 13 percent in 2010 to a record high, helping it to retain its leadership in the industry for the fifth straight year.
Perodua, which is partly owned by Japanese mini-car maker Daihatsu Motor Corp., said Wednesday it sold 188,600 vehicles last year to give it a 31.2 percent share of Southeast Asia's largest passenger car market.
It said in a statement that it plans to launch a new car model this year and aims to increase sales to 195,000 vehicles, but declined to elaborate on the new car.
Perodua overtook national carmaker Proton as the best selling car brand in Malaysia in 2006.
